A typical new pony shoppers experience:
I'd be very leery of the cheap, find 'em at the auction route. There's many reasons why a pony would be at the auction, and most of those reasons are not good.
Maybe I just kept coming across bad ponies in my search, but even trying an inappropriate pony can have devastating consequences. I was quite clear in all communication with pony sellers that I needed a bombproof pony for a timid walk/trot rider. One of these little darlings took off at a dead run and then spun on a dime, with my 7 year old on her, throwing him *hard* into the wall of the indoor. Yep, that did a lot for his confidence. It got to the point that no matter how small the pony, we were looking at, *I* got on it first. One pony was so barn sour that it threw itself on the ground (and me!) when I asked it to walk forward (but better falling on me than my son). Another pony was so strong that *I* could not steer it, forget about my son. We found a wonderful pony - quiet, could be ridden by my son in a halter & leadline - it had severe soundness issues behind where it couldn't pick up a foot to be picked without great difficulty. Vet said "no way" without even taking x-rays. And these ponies are just some of my stories - I have more.
Why go to the auction and potentially be stuck with a pony like we encountered? For an experienced adult rider who knows the risk of potential behavior/physical issues of getting a horse at auction, fine. For a kid? For a first pony who needs to be a saint? No way!
